many of you who are friends with me on facebook already know about my eating lifestyle change…..almost six months ago, i dropped most processed foods out of my diet and began consuming green smoothies + lots of whole raw fruits and veggies on a daily basis. i continued this for about four months and lost 25 pounds effortlessly (went from a size 14 jeans to a size 6)+ i started to feel better physically and mentally. then i decided to add back in whole grains and small amounts of dairy and that’s when things started going downhill fast. long story short, one month ago i decided to go see a naturopathic doctor that a friend recommended to me and have some tests run.

fast forward to last wednesday, i found out that i’m not only dairy and gluten intolerant, but i’m also showing reactions to sugar cane, lettuce, pecans, crab, lobster, + a few other things. also, my iron is ridiculously low, as well as my b6 & b12 levels. so now i’m on an elimination diet for the next six weeks and taking supplements for my vitamin/mineral deficiencies in addition to the multi-vitamin  and d3 supplements i was already taking.

so, feeling quite overwhelmed, i turned to God for answers on how to go forward with this new information. any of you who have gone through this yourselves, know how much of a challenge it is eliminating things from your diet like these…..those top three are in almost everything! even gluten-free cereals, breads, and such. so, this weekend i turned to God…..and what He answered back should have been so obvious to me, but my brain was so full with everything that was happening that i couldn’t see it. i needed to return to the raw foods diet that He brought to me when i started to pray about my health and well being six months ago, but with this new found information about my food intolerances taken into account. and to not try to do it 100%….to listen to what my body told me it needed. that He designed our bodies to know what they needed to function at optimum efficiency….this body is a gift and i need to make sure i always treat it as such. and if i didn’t give it what it needed, it would be sure to let me know! lol!

so this morning, i did just that and i’m starting to feel a peace about eating again for the first time in months. i’ll still eat meat and cooked veggies…..it will be more of a 50/50 split, but keeping my diet filled with whole foods and a minimal amount of processed ones.

above is a picture of what i had this morning for breakfast….i just thought about what i had on hand and some raw food breakfast recipes i’d seen in all the books i’ve checked out from the library over the past few months. for those of you curious about what’s in it, i’ll include the recipe below. it was quite yummy and filling. and no, i do not know how many calories, or fat grams, or carbs are in it. i don’t keep track of that stuff because if i try too, my brain gets overloaded and it makes me nuts. simplicity is important for me. i just make sure i’m eating whole foods and healthy fats in moderation. that is the key.

  • 1/2 small ripe avocado
  • 1/2 ripe banana
  • small handful chopped cashews
  • small handful chopped walnuts
  • handful of raisins (unsweetened & no sulfites)
  • light drizzle of raw agave

if any of you want to see more posts about eating for your health, please leave a comment for me on this post. this is something that is very close to my heart and i want to share it with y’all and i’d be happy to start doing more posts on this subject. :)

blessings & hugs to y’all! have a fantabulous monday!!

  1. I would love to hear more about your healthy eating lifestyle Paulette, blog away! God Bless.

  2. hey girl! i am so in the same boat as you are. if you need some moral support, i am here. about a year ago i found out i have food sensitivities to wheat, dairy, yeast and eggs. with yeast you can’t have sugar, alcohol, vinegar and lots of other stuff because it feeds the yeast in your body. anyways, i have fell off the wagon many many times and strayed from my diet. then i feel awful and everything get messed up again. this last week i started fresh and it is the first time that i have had peace and felt free instead of restrained. don’t know why. it has been tough.

if you need recipes of any sort let me know because i have a ton. :) do you know anything about coconut oil? it has amazing healing properties. try taking three tablespoons a day. it should help with healing your gut. although you might feel worse at first because it is getting rid of all those bugs and yeast in your body.

i totally know the feeling of being overwhelmed. i will pray peace over you and that your body will start healing. email me if you want to talk.

I would love to more also. God has me on my own journey as well.

I would also love to hear more about your journey with eating healthier. God has been whispering the same thing in my eye lately. All of a sudden, I’m loving water with lemon in it, and fresh salad each day. I’d like to move forward from here and more to a more raw foods diet without getting obsessive about it. I know I can’t eat a completely raw diet… most days I just have to have something hot to eat in order to feel like I’m full.

I would love to hear more about eating for health. I have a serious problem with adrenal fatigue from years of excessive stress. Need to change my food choices, but it is difficult when I don’t have the energy. I am so run down from daily life & carrying extra weight. Wondering if you would recommend the naturopath you are seeing…I live in Salem.

God lead me that way too ,would love to read more about your journey to health.

  7. I would skip the agave…it’s super high in fructose and not a health food at all. If you can find Coconut Nectar that is MUCH better (very low on glycemic index). Or buy coconut palm sugar and make your own syrup by heating 1 and 1/2 cups coconut sugar with 1 cup water to dissolve. Cool and store in jar. Good luck with the food journey…and I agree with Wendy…add the coconut oil!!!

Your breakfast looks sorta yummy and slightly scary. Never though of bananas and avocados together although i love them both! lol I love hearing about your healthy eating and wish I could sit at your table every day to receive my portion. I’m at a loss lately as to what direction to take in my eating and that is where I get in trouble. I will watch with rapt attention for any more posts of this nature. thanks for sharing!

I also am on the natural train of eating..Just beginning my self..I am starting to do it in moderation…I am beginning a new supplement program.. The agave which they say is healthy is not… Pure brown cane sugar is better for you if you can do that…Also the coconut nectur which is wonderful for you.It is so hard because there are so many things you hear and then your brain is so confused..I agree with you eat the the things God made and not man made..We can not go wrong with that.. God Bless and keep listening to his voice.

You can’t have LETTUCE?! Our bodies do strange things sometimes. Figuring out food intolerance is no fun, but I’m so glad that you have a plan, as well as positive raw experiences to turn to — plus God! I’ll be interestedly watching to see what you discover about your self and you body during this process. Thank you for sharing!

I would love to see more posts about your healthy diet as well. I tried a raw food diet a couple of years ago. It’s very hard to get started. It’s even more difficult when you have others to feed (especially a husband). I found a lot of information out there, but they were all from hardcore raw foodies. It would be great to see things from a “real” person. Thanks so much for sharing.

  12. Carli says:

    Wow. What a change.
Have you posted your green smoothie recipe ever, and I have just missed it?

I know this is hard, but once something is out of your system, you stop craving it, eventually. I know you know this, so you will succeed once the hardest first part is past. =)

    Paulette,
I’ve been going through much of the same in the last few months. I’ve been doing a total plant based diet…. no meat, no dairy. And because of my arthritis, I am also not eating any glutens or nightshades, which include tomatoes, peppers, eggplants…

It hasn’t all been easy, and I’m still doing a bit of an elimination diet to figure out everything that triggers my psoriasis and arthritis. But in so many ways it’s been healing and helpful.

I will be following your posts to see how you’re doing!

    Love and Prayers… Linda

We just bought the movie “Simply Raw” and it was so amazing to watch…it’s a documentary about 6 people from all walks of life who come together to a Raw Food Ranch/Retreat to test what eating raw foods for 30 days will do to bodies. All of them were in poor health and had either Type 1 or Type 2 diabeties. Within 3 days they were all off of their medications…including their diabetes medicines. The two cases of Type 1 diabetes were able to totally eliminate their insulin shots with the exception of one of the participants who got his down to one shot a day from the original 16 shots…amazing! One man quite and went home early because he didn’t like the raw, vegan foods. The deal was that they only had to eat the raw/vegan for 30 days and afterwards when they went home they were to go ahead and introduce back in some meats/carbs and cooked foods. It was very inspiring and if you have the chance to watch it…I highly recommend it. To me the beauty of it was that they didn’t have to cook/prepare the food for 30 days. Yet they were given cooking and nutrition lessons. I’m so bad about watching what I eat and food prep because I get so busy (as we’ve talked about before ;) that stopping to eat the right foods is a pain…lol My weakness is my protein bars…good and convenient. Please do keep us posted on your journey. Fondly, Roberta

I am always trying to find quick easy healthy meals and snacks for my family. I would love to see lots of posts about this. Thanks.

  17. thank you all sooooooooo much for all your support and heartfelt comments! i will for sure be posting about my healthy eating journey in the weeks to come. :)

i know all about agave and the controversy….just was what i had left in the house and decided to use it up. :) got myself some coconut nectar that i’m about to use on some gluten-free/dairy-free/sugar-free bagels i picked up yesterday along with some smashed avocado. its what’s for lunch today along with fresh strawberries and baby carrots. yum! :D

i actually have some coconut oil, but have struggled using it because it lends such a strong coconut flavor to everything…even when i use a small amount. now, i love coconut, but i don’t want everything to taste like it. lol! ;)

oh and i did post one green smoothie recipe a little while back, but haven’t posted another one since. i’ll have to get better about that. i’ve been posting them on facebook, so i’ll have to get them on here too.

Yes, I would like very much to hear more about your food choices and recipes — what you are learning as you make those changes. It is definitely some of the things I know I need to do.

  19. Stephanie says:

I wanna cry as I read this. I have been there, and need to go back, but honestly am fighting so many other things in our life right now that one more thing is just too overwhelming.
Thank you for sharing though. Perhaps one day, I can get back on track.

  20. Amanda says:

I am here at the moment, suddenly started to have reaction to wheat, rice and milk chocolate! having to overhall my diet – I love vegetarian food, and really starting to look at more raw foods and experimenting. Be great to hear more about things you’ve tried that have been nourishing! Stay blessed. Amanda

Hi Paulette, If it’s not too late, I’d love to hear more about your food recipes and food choices. I am at the point where I know I need to make changes, but just thinking about it – and where to start can be overwhelming. Also, does your family eat this way too now or do you cook something else for them to eat?
    Thank you!

  23. Amanda says:

Hey Paulette, my journey seems to mirror yours gluten, wheat, dairy, would also love to hear about your recipes, amazingly my husband found going gluten and wheat free to have benefits so cooking for the family doesn’t mean cooking lots of different dishes. Have found some lovely salads, dressings and vegetarian dishes, though will need to top up on iron. Will check out your bread recipe.
